Traditional under ground systems

Traditional Rear Arm (ram) systems
"Traditional under ground systems. A favourite of many ."

Many customers often see the traditional underground system as the most desirable automatic security gate system on the market - if for no other reason than the operating controls are hidden 'underground'. In the picture above you'll see a 'plate' positioned on the ground, at either side of the automatic gates. These 'plates' are in fact covering the underground box-holes that house the automatic gate opener control motors/mechanisms. The underground system gives good reliability together with a good 'tidy' finished look - when used in appropriate physical locations.

At Ultra Secure Ltd, we find the ideal situation for the underground system is when automating twin gates, normally of steel construction, where the length of each gate is not more than 3 meters.

Depending on the size and style of the automatic gate, we choose from various underground systems from various manufacturers. Being totally independent Ultra Secure Ltd are free to find the most appropriate gate system for each installation. However, we do not use hydraulic systems - as we favour electro-mechanical methods.

All the gate systems require mains voltage at or near the gate installation, but we do have the option of using 240 v ac motors or 24-volt dc motors. Battery back up is available for 24-volt systems.

The automatic gates will feel firmly locked when closed due to the motor and gearbox. However we do recommend an additional lock is fitted to the gates, when the length of each leaf extends beyond 2.5 meters. All our automatic gates are also supplied with a key that enables them to be manually opened in an emergency.

Important considerations when opting for the underground automatic gate systems are:

  • There is quite a lot of groundwork to be carried out; obviously the boxes need concreting in the ground, which requires that a large hole be dug.
  • There needs to be a minimum of 65 mm allowance between the gatepost and centre of the hinge pins.
  • It is best to have a mechanical stop in the ground at the closed and open position. Although, if your gates are too high off the ground - it may create another problem, as a large stop that may catch the underneath of a low car.
  • It is vital that during the groundwork a drain-away is fitted from the motor boxes in order to prevent a build up of water.
  • The underground gate system is not recommended if the area where the gateposts will be is prone to flooding. Although the motors are fully water proof - continued flooding will have an eventual ruinous effect on them.
  • Obviously, solar power is not an option with the underground system.

All normal operating methods are available when using this underground system ranging from:

  • Push buttonRemote control
  • Digital keypads
  • Push buttons
  • Intercoms
  • Timers.

Q: where would we typically use this underground system?
